The
Half Shell Raw Bar
(305) 294-7496
231 Margaret Street
Set in the heart of Land's End Village,
the Half Shell Raw Bar looks like an old
boat shack. Once a shrimp-packing building,
it has stayed true to its blue-collar heritage.
Once inside, your server will point you
to a life-sized blackboard menu posted overhead.
This place is a seafood-lover's dream. Half
Shell is the place for good ol' raw oysters
and beer. Start off with some raw oysters
(they don't steam 'em here, so gutsy up).
After your oysters ($4.50 for 1/2 dozen),
try the blackened tuna sandwich ($8.50).
It's perfectly grilled and boasts just enough
cajun spices to make you sip your drink
- but not chug it. Most of the Half Shell's
entrees range from $7.25 to $18.95.

Pepe's
Café & Steak House
806 Caroline Street
This restaurant, Key West's first eating establishment,
is a local's favorite. Built in 1909, Pepe's
is still known for its breakfast menu, in
addition to its baked oysters (including Oysters
Florentine and Mexican Roast Oysters - $6.50
per half dozen). The one thing about Pepe's
- don't go by looking for some extravagant
sign or building. If you were just passing
by and didn't know its name, you'd probably
steer clear of it. The building looks the
same as it did in 1909. Pepe's offers everything
on its menu from fresh fish sandwiches ($6.75)
to Pepe's Steak Smothered in Pork Chops ($20).
You can also buy paraphernalia while you're
there, including world famous t-shirts ($15.50),
hats ($14) and bar towels ($6).
You'll
find drinking to be among the favorite pastimes
of Key Westers. According to one source, Key
West lays claim to more bars per capita than
anywhere else in the United States. Even Ernest
Hemingway indulged in ritual drinking at one
of Key West's local hangouts (Sloppy Joe's).
It was said that Hemingway built his house
directly across from the Key West Lighthouse
so that he could find his way home after a
night of drinking at Sloppy Joe's.
From
the more commercial bars, including Jimmy
Buffet's Margaritaville and Hard Rock Café
to one-of-a-kind watering holes such as The
Green Parrot and Hog's Breath Saloon, vacationers
are served up a slew of drinks. Make sure
to try some of the Key West originals, including
the Goombay Smash (Hog's Breath) and a Black
and Tan from Finnegan's Wake Irish Pub &
Eatery.
